Ted Stone Memorial

Who is Ted Stone?

Ted Stone began his highly successful pitching career with the Oshawa Legion, Branch 43, Baseball Association in 1946. In 1953, while playing for the Oshawa Merchants of the Inter County League, he was scouted by the Boston Red Sox. At the end of the season, he signed a professional contract and began his pro career in 1954 in the Red Sox farm system.

Ted played for the Corning, New York Red Sox in 1954, finishing with an impressive 13-2 record. The following year, he became the ace of the Corning Red Sox staff, posting a 13-8 record. In 1956, after a brief call-up to the Carolina League the previous year, he secured six more wins for the Greensboro, North Carolina Patriots. He continued his climb in 1957, starting the season in Albany, New York, where he pitched primarily in relief for the Albany Senators. Over his professional career, the hard-throwing right-hander recorded a 33-22 record.

Returning to Oshawa in 1958, Ted rejoined the Merchants and played semi-pro baseball while also beginning a coaching career that spanned over 30 years in the Oshawa Minor Baseball Association. Throughout the 1960s and beyond, he mentored and developed countless young pitchers in the Oshawa system.

His contributions to the game were widely recognized. He was named OLMBA’s right-handed pitcher of the decade for the 1950s, coach of the decade for the 1960s, and was ultimately voted the best right-handed pitcher of the century. Ted was inducted into the Oshawa Sports Hall of Fame in 1996 and again in 2001 alongside his teammates from the 1952 Oshawa McCallum Transporters. His number 10 was officially retired in 2002.
