Troy May Memorial Tournament - Hosted by Baseball Oshawa: A Celebration of Passion, Commitment, and Legacy
This weekend, the Oshawa Legion Minor Baseball Association (OLMBA) will host the much-anticipated Troy May Memorial Tournament. It is a heartfelt event that honours a remarkable individual who contributed so much to baseball in the community, both on and off the field.
Troy May, a beloved figure in the Eastern Ontario baseball community, served as the past president of both OLMBA and the Eastern Ontario Baseball Association (EOBA). He was instrumental in obtaining OLMBA's first "Trillium Grant'' from the Ontario Government, which resulted in significant upgrades to Kinsmen Stadium, including a sprinkler system and other essential equipment.
May's passion for the game shone brightly during his nine seasons as head coach of the Oshawa Junior Legionaires. He went on to launch the Dodgers of the InterCounty Baseball League (IBL) in 2002, serving as a field manager and 3rd base coach until his untimely passing. His dedication and vision earned him admiration and respect from his peers, with IBL Commissioner Jim Rooney stating that May's passion was "an important ingredient in the success of the Oshawa Dodgers and the IBL."
In addition to his impressive career, Troy May's most cherished baseball memory was guiding the Oshawa team to an unprecedented victory at the 1999 Junior Eliminations, winning their first elimination tournament in the 55-year history of Oshawa Legion Minor Baseball and gaining a spot in the Canadian Championships.
Today, May's love for baseball and his commitment to mentoring the youth of Oshawa lives on through his two sons, Jamie and Conner, who currently coach the Oshawa Legionaires Junior team. It is evident that Troy May's passion and dedication to the sport, as well as the community, has left a lasting impression on all who were lucky enough to know him.
The Troy May Memorial Tournament is a fitting tribute to a man who made significant strides in shaping the baseball landscape in Oshawa and Eastern Ontario. As the players take the field this weekend, we honour not only an exceptional coach, leader, and mentor but a cherished friend whose memory and love for the game will continue to inspire generations to come.
