The Rally Cap Division 6U(coach pitch) aims to ensure that players have fun and learn the game in a safe way. It is essential that Coaches use the rules below in a manner consistent with these aims. The game outcome is not relevant in comparison to the practice of patience and good sportsmanship.
1. The goals of this Division are to have fun and to start to develop basic baseball skills.
2. All batters will bat in each offensive appearance, regardless of the number of outs made by the defensive team (i.e., 3 outs do not end the half inning). If your team manages to record an out, please call us immediately; we will require video proof. All players will play a defensive position in their defensive appearance.
3. Lead offs and base stealing are not allowed. The base runner may only leave the base when the batter contacts the ball. If the base runner leaves the base before the batter contacts the baseball or leads off for any other reason, the Coach shall remind the runner(s).
4. Three Coaches are allowed in the field during their defensive appearance. As there are no Umpires for Rally Cap, Coaches are expected to facilitate each competitive scrimmage.
5. Coaches shall make every effort to ensure players experience multiple positions over the course of the summer.
6. The infield positions are first base, second base, third base, shortstop, and rover (between 2nd base and short stop). There is no player at the Pitcher position for Rally Cap. Additional players can play in the infield at a secondary depth.
7. Each batter is permitted 4 coach pitches as necessary to hit the ball. If they are not able to hit, the coach can pull out the T to facilitate a hit. Coaches should use player-by-player judgment as to whether a small hit off the tee (e.g., 5 feet) constitutes a hit, or whether that player can generally hit farther and should try again.
8. Batters must take full swings.
9. When the last batter is at bat, any base runners on the offensive team are regarded in the same manner as the last batter, and no defensive play can be made on them on the bases. They are all forced home when the last batter has hit the ball fairly.
12. It is the offensive Coach’s responsibility to call out ‘last batter’.
13. Rolling of the ball is not allowed in place of a throw. Players are strongly encouraged to not eat the infield dirt.
14. The dead ball line is an imaginary line that extends from the tip of the plate 15 feet down the first base line and runs in an arc from there to a spot 15 feet from the tip of the plate down the third base line. The Coach overseeing the batter is responsible for deciding if the ball travels enough distance to pass the dead ball line; Coach’s discretion is encouraged to ensure this is applied only for hitters with insufficient strength.
15. Defensive players are not allowed to cross the dead ball line before the ball is hit. In the interest of player safety, coaches are to instruct players to remain at least 15 feet from home plate.
